The "Cap Arcona" was sunk by the Royal Air Force in the East Sea in May of 1945. It is estimated that 5,800 people on board were killed - one of largest maritime losses of life. British intelligence on the presence of war prisoners on the ship never reached the pilots who attacked them. As they made their final descent, the airmen likely believed they were attacking bona fide hostile targets. Ultimately, the fate of the Cap Arcona and its passengers was a tragic consequence of the fog of war.
